Inspired by memories of places and people past, “solo waltz” is about the affectionate longing that comes from leaving behind something or someone you love. Inspired by the longing I have for the home I left many years ago, two figures are intertwined in a dance, but the one fades into the other, nearly disappearing, and the first figure is left to waltz with her memory. Rendered in loose brushstrokes and pencil lines, my hope was to infuse this painting with etherealness, whimsy and melancholy.

Getting to Know Sumner

Sumner Crenshaw infuses her work with movement, lines and varying degrees of color. She currently lives in Maryland and finds inspiration in the work of Salvador Dalí. Her goal is to keep exploring the minimalist, narrative surrealism she’s been moving toward. Fun fact: The Ballet Russes inspired her to start a series that explores dance through painting.
