About this artwork
This tall, thin painting captures the noble stature of an impressive redwood tree in contrast to the delicate foliage highlighted by filtered sunlight, says artist Mandy Main. Mandy enlivened the brown trunk with violet grays in the shade and yellow greens in the sun. The leaves shine in vibrant saturated greens, with the tones becoming cooler and more subdued as the foliage recedes into the background. I applied the paint with a palette knife over a dark underpainting, keeping details very loose, Mandy explains.
