Nancy Hughes Miller’s contemporary seascape in cool, muted colors features soft light emerging from the clouds. A late day walk along Bird Island Nature Reserve in her native North Carolina supplied the inspiration for the work. Nancy is constantly looking up at the sky on her walks, and she combines bits and pieces from photos and memories to create her compositions. "I work with what nature shows me, its simplest elements, experimenting with color, darks and lights, until a sense of movement and atmosphere emerges," she explains.

Getting to Know Nancy

Reflected in Nancy Hughes Miller’s paintings are the coastal and rural environments of southeastern North Carolina, her birthplace, where she still spends much of her time. As a child, Nancy’s primary education did not include art classes, so she was delighted when one day her oldest brother returned home from college with newsprint and charcoal. She went on to pursue a career path in graphic design and fine arts. Now a full-time artist, Nancy experiments with vibrant colors and fluid forms to create her non-traditional, painterly landscapes. She enjoys working with oils, a medium that dries slowly and lends itself nicely to blending. Nancy strives to produce artwork that is, according to her, “quiet, yet bold.”
