Stephen Austin
Lakewood, Colorado
Colorado-based painter Stephen Austin creates intricate geometric abstractions that mimic the flow of energy throughout the universe. He observes that regardless of scale, whether inside a teacup or across the solar system, patterns of motion repeat themselves. His paintings reconstruct natural forces that connect micro- and macrocosms, such as traveling light, diffusing particles and dissipating energy. "My art is straightforward in that it visually represents whatever the title may be," explains Stephen. "The final image depicts highly geometric analysis and reconstruction of the subject." The forms are restless and dynamic; they appear to twist and roll through space. To create his paintings, he begins by compiling several rapidly-drawn gestural sketches. Then, he reworks these sketches with close analysis to build the final composition. His work has been featured in the New York Times Sunday Magazine and he has had numerous solo shows in Colorado.
