This is a bluff from the Red Rocks area of the desert. The summer shadows are so bold when put in conjunction with bright sunlit rocks and vegetation. I hope that my paintings will make you remember a place from your past, or remind you to look again at the beautiful natural world around you. We think of the desert as dry and bland, but there are a million colors blending together to form the vista you are seeing.

The painting is heavy impasto oil paint with a coat of varnish to preserve the finish. The frame is custom-made from dark walnut by my wood shop. It is provided at no additional charge, and can be removed or replaced at your discretion. The work comes wired to hang.

Getting to Know Matthew

Matthew Frederick lived on an Arabian horse ranch with his partner for 17 years, raising and breeding award-winning show horses. It was there, in the barn, where he dedicated himself to painting. Matthew received his art degree in the ‘80s, but went on to pursue a career in landscape design. After many years in the field, he burned out and felt a rekindling desire to paint. Matthew’s work is a backlash to the traditionally serious nature of the landscape genre. His work presents nature and structure with a delightful whimsy that reminds the viewer to turn their head and look again the next time they pass a familiar place that has lost its allure.
