Delicate purple and pink clouds roll across the coast, casting shadows and refracting sunlight on the white sand beach. Waves gently lap at the shore. Early walks on the beach give Nancy Hughes Miller much inspiration for her coastal landscapes. She looks to express the symbiotic relationship between the sky, clouds, ocean and sand. Nancy says, "While painting the beach, I recall its uplifting atmosphere of salty breezes, breaking waves and colorful clouds. All these elements work together to refresh my spirit."
Cary, North Carolina
Reflected in Nancy Hughes Miller’s paintings are the coastal and rural environments of southeastern North Carolina, her birthplace, where she still spends much of her time. As a child, Nancy’s primary education did not include art classes, so she was delighted when one day her oldest brother returned home from college with newsprint and charcoal. She went on to pursue a career path in graphic design and fine arts. Now a full-time artist, Nancy experiments with vibrant colors and fluid forms to create her non-traditional, painterly landscapes. She enjoys working with oils, a medium that dries slowly and lends itself nicely to blending. Nancy strives to produce artwork that is, according to her, “quiet, yet bold.”
