"Great to see neon making a comeback," says Mitchell Freifeld. "There's a lot of new neon sprouting up all over the country, but there's some neon that has managed to survive from the golden age. In this series, I wanted the vintage neon signage to be the focus. And I love our old bridges here in Portland, Oregon, so I attached the signs to the Steel Bridge from 1912. The Merry Wink is on the highway between Carson City and Reno, Nevada. Its sign is elaborate and unchanged from mid-century. It's absolutely wonderful."

Getting to Know Mitchell

Mitchell Freifeld cannot remember a time when he did not draw and paint. He won his first juried show at age 10 and decided that someday, he'd be a 'real painter.' He settled in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early '70s and got involved in the burgeoning tech industry. From there, he moved to Portland upon accepting an information technology position. On the drive home after being laid off the day of the September 11 terrorist attacks, he realized life is short and decided to devote himself full-time to painting. His work focuses on architecture and cityscapes, and portrays everyday places that become lost to our curiosity through sheer familiarity.
