Nancy paints the coastal marsh near her home with saturated yellow-green grass below a bright blue sky. Experimenting with her observations, she creates a bold yet quiet impression of everyday nature. "I find it very relaxing and soothing to view the marsh wetlands that separate barrier islands from the mainland," says Nancy. "They are especially beautiful in mid-summer, when the grass turns brilliant yellow-green."

Getting to Know Nancy

Reflected in Nancy Hughes Miller’s paintings are the coastal and rural environments of southeastern North Carolina, her birthplace, where she still spends much of her time. As a child, Nancy’s primary education did not include art classes, so she was delighted when one day her oldest brother returned home from college with newsprint and charcoal. She went on to pursue a career path in graphic design and fine arts. Now a full-time artist, Nancy experiments with vibrant colors and fluid forms to create her non-traditional, painterly landscapes. She enjoys working with oils, a medium that dries slowly and lends itself nicely to blending. Nancy strives to produce artwork that is, according to her, “quiet, yet bold.”
