This painting was inspired by a recent trip to visit my mom at her new house. While getting a tour of her new place, I was struck by her hand-crafted decor, all of which she made herself, including a painting that contrasted stripes of baby blue with the natural canvas color. Inspired by her handiwork I created this piece, which returns to one of my favorite subjects, a ballerina, and features the same juxtaposition of natural canvas and swathes of pastel hues. Thanks for the inspiration, Mom!

Getting to Know Sumner

Sumner Crenshaw infuses her work with movement, lines and varying degrees of color. She currently lives in Maryland and finds inspiration in the work of Salvador Dalí. Her goal is to keep exploring the minimalist, narrative surrealism she’s been moving toward. Fun fact: The Ballet Russes inspired her to start a series that explores dance through painting.
