This painting is full of life. I paint from a photo or video, and rework some colors to disappear in favor of others. It is based on nature, but flirts with abstraction, leaving a large part up to interpretation and the viewer's imagination.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to its size, this painting will ship from the artist's studio in France un-stretched and rolled in a tube. The detail images are just to give a sense of how the work will look as a finished piece.

Getting to Know Clément

Clément Nivert lives in Bois le Roi in north central France, near the Forest of Fontainebleau where the artists of the Barbizon School used to gather to paint in the 1800s. He draws inspiration from this past, creating art with a “French spirit.” There is a lot of movement in the work, produced with fluid colors and shapes. Identifying forms, resembling treetops or light sparkling through shrubs, provides clues to where we are; the paintings can feel like we are watching the countryside rush by from the window of a car. At the same time, the ripples and reflections created by Clément’s impressionist brushstrokes are reminiscent of Claude Monet’s waterlilies. It’s easy to see a loyalism for the history of French painting and Clément’s heritage. He generally works outside to be with the light. His color schemes show time in transition and at a point of drama–the last light of the day or the weather right before a storm. A musician when he is not making artwork, Clément finds the musicality of abstraction intriguing. The way the colors harmonize and create expression is what he finds most beautiful about painting.
