About this artwork

An elegantly dressed woman turns her back from the viewer in artist Mary Pratt's contemporary portrait. The subject wears a chic ensemble of a white gown with black gloves and her lush black hair neatly tied in an updo. Using sketches from life, Mary infuses glamour using bright hues contrasted with a limited palette. My go-to mixture of dark color is created using Egyptian violet with Courbet green, shares Mary. She uses copious amounts of the alluring combination to create a rich, captivating contrast.
