About
This
Artwork

Artist Mary Pratt paints a portrait of a Cotswold sheep featuring thick, textured layers of paint. She achieves a rich tactile surface with light impasto. Bold, broad strokes emphasize the sheep's woolly fleece, celebrating the natural world. The dark background anchors the sheep while allowing its subtle color to pop.

Mary Pratt

Lawrenceville, Georgia

Mary Pratt, a Georgia-based artist, is known for her impressionistic yet modern oil paintings that capture the world with a jovial poise. Her soft, ethereal palette is complemented by the occasional bright pop of color. The artist’s aesthetic choices are intuitive rather than premeditated. Through her gestural brushstrokes, Mary’s paintings summon a joyful, even childlike, emotional response. Her style is nuanced by a range of inspirations, including scenery from the state of Georgia. The personal edge that Mary brings to each painting alters and enhances recognizable subject matter, cultivating an imaginative visual experience.

We love this new art in our dining room. We've probably bought 40-50 original art works from UGallery and have been very, very happy being a customer here.

Karen, So good to see your name on the receipt. As always it is an honor for me to send one of my favorite paintings to you! I hope you have a wonderful holiday! Many thanks!

Karen, I just accidentally clicked on the blog and just now saw this email from you. You are so kind!! I am so upset that I didn’t see this so I’ll look through junk mail and see if it landed there. The piece did sell while I was on a trip to Italy with my daughter and grandaughters. It was a wonderful trip; you would have loved the art. We went to the amalfi coast where the views are incredible! I’m going to search my junk email for the notification. I would never ignore you or anyone. I’ll let you know if I found it. Hope you are well!! Mary

Mary, loving Ladies in Waiting. Sadly it's too hot and humid to hang art in my garage since I have 20 foot ceilings in there. To my great dismay that's the only space I have left for a piece this size. Love the colors! Karen

Hi Karen, So odd but your blog note arrived in my junk email so I just now saw your entries. 2017 was a great year, thanks to patrons like you. It is such an honor to know you have my work throughout your home and I hope they bring you joy! Working from a model always brings greater truth to the work and I think "Lacy" is an example of that. Eagle Ranch is just north of me in the rolling hills of an idyllic farm. I became friends with Eddie Staub, the founder of "Eagle Ranch" and donated a mural in their community food pantry. The at risk kids are housed in several homes on the farm. A married couple live in each home and they are assigned several children where they live as a family to help the kids re- integrate back into their own families eventually. Eddie Staub had a vision and he followed through and built Eagle Ranch. He and his wife are very lovely people. Thanks for noticing the card!! May all your dreams come true! Mary

K Julian style="color: #000000;"1/16/2018 | 1:54 AM

Haven't gotten around to hanging Lacy yet (I need an assist) but every time I walk past her I have the same thought. This oil painting was absolutely meant to be with me. In the 14 pieces I've acquired from you I think Lacy will be in my top 5 favorites. So glad I grabbed her.

K Julian style="color: #000000;"1/12/2018 | 10:50 PM

Mary, I received Lacy today with what seemed like the speed of light. The painting is beautiful. I was interested to learn it was based on a live model. She is gorgeous. I also enjoyed the card you enclosed which caused me to google Eagle Ranch. I was surprised to hear the average stay was 18 to 24 months. It sounds like they are committed to doing the work it takes. Very inspiring. I believe Lacy is my 14th oil painting from you. That has to be some kind of record. Safe to say your work monopolizes my wall space, much to my delight.

Mary Pratt 1/4/2018 | 3:37 PM

Karen!!!! Happy New Year!!! "Lacy" will be on her way in a few days!!Many, many, thanks!! Sending you best wishes for 2018!

Mary Pratt 11/9/2017 | 4:40 PM

Many many thanks !! Hah not question marks!

Mary Pratt 11/9/2017 | 4:32 PM

Karen, I am without words; so so grateful for your patronage. Lining up the photos of the 2 pieces you purchased for that area in your home, I see the contrast and the color connection. "Skinny Legs and All" was a pop hit written by Joe Tex in 1967 ;I remember dancing to it in high school. When I finished the painting I saw "legs" and that song came to mind. The large birds I researched are cranes that grow to 5'5" talk. I thought they would round out the space aesthetically. Please enjoy the work and know that I am beaming inside. When the acquisition appeared on my phone ,I was eating lunch in a little town north of my home. My friend, the entire restaurant and staff were as excited as I was as I am not so great at hiding my feelings! Many many thanks??

K Julian style="color: #000000;"11/9/2017 | 1:51 PM

Oh Mary, I'm a very happy person today. I pulled U Gallery up on my computer because I know new art is typically posted on Thursdays. And there is was; "Legs and All'. The scale of the birds and their yellow feet are fabulous giving me permission to not take life too seriously. I smiled, giggled and then laughed so hard that I snorted. Also love the name. It will be in the same large hall across from "Elegant in Blue". I like that their colors blend and yet the subjects are such a contrast. I'm not sure I've written since I purchased "Wait, What?". Again, love the name and the painting is absolutely beautiful. I sort of consider myself your greatest fan and Legs and All sealed the deal. It's right up there with my all time purchase from you; "Flamingo Cha Cha.

K Julian style="color: #000000;"8/28/2017 | 2:50 PM

Thanks Mary. It's 10 PM CST. Sat. There's a south to north band of red rain from Gulf of Mexico straight up and thru downtown Houston. I am in that path. I've gotten 4 inches of rain per hour for last several hours. It's moving very slow. My street is under water and my backyard is a lake but it should drain quickly if we get a little reprieve. I built my new home on what's called pier and beam so there's no way I will get water in my house but houses that are built at grade will not be as lucky. We've had isolated tornados, but barring that I'm okay and still have power. Heart goes out to others who do/will have water in their homes. Rain could continue for 4 more days. After 65+ years in Houston, I've never seen a slower moving storm!

Mary Pratt 8/26/2017 | 2:39 PM

Hi Karen, You and all the residents being effected by Harvey are in my thoughts and prayers for relief from the storm! Mary

Karen..Happy Friday!! Thank you for your continued patronage. I am excited to pack "Fifi" for shipping...and I love that she will be part of your art collection! I guess this is what a girl's going to do!!!!

Mary Pratt 8/6/2017 | 8:09 PM

Karen, I'm so glad you are enjoying the work!! I am laughing at the idea of taunting you with new work; you could build another wall!! I was painting "Fifi" and I thought there was something missing and knew she needed a dog, preferably a poodle. After sketching in one poodle I thought the dog would be lonely so I painted in her companion. Usually I see the painting in my mind and then I paint...this time the work evolved. I named the piece "Fifi" only after eliminating the pups names. I wanted the viewer to guess whose name was "Fifi". So now you know!! I think Poodles are beautiful and smart. I hope you are settling into your new digs and feeling at peace. Moving, building and your other life experience are all stressful especially at the same time! I hope someday you'll be able to share photos of your new home and the artwork in it's new setting!

K Julian style="color: #000000;"8/6/2017 | 7:56 PM

Mary, sorry I've been so slow to write to tell you how much I'm enjoying my last two paintings; Angelic and Straw Marsh. I could swear you are taunting me with your two newest pieces. I love the red kimono on the latest geisha and you've just gone too far with the poodles. Due to allergies, poodles are the only breed I've ever had my entire life. I currently have two seniors. Surely you must sense I am running out of wall space. What's a girl to do?

Margaret, Thanks for your interest in "Straw Marsh"! I am not sure if a purchase for Ugallery can be made through Crate and Barrel. I would be able to hold the piece and ship when you need to receive it when the purchase is complete. The gallery manager, Samantha can probably answer your questions better. Again thanks!! I am interested in your painting titled "Straw Marsh" but I have a couple of questions about it. First off, I see you are selling some of your pieces with Create and Barrel, will this piece be offered there and of so or not would it be possible to purchase it thru C&B ? Secondly, if not I am out of town until July 10, can you ship it out then? thank you

K Julian style="color: #000000;"5/8/2017 | 2:22 PM

What great news. I sent Samantha my new address, so it will be shipped there. All the pieces of art I have purchased from you are in place with the exception of Flamingo Cha Cha which is doing temporary duty in my sitting room until an original oil I bought 5 months ago arrives. It's a huge piece and has somehow been stuck in a port on the West Coast and won't arrive until June. Flamingo Cha Cha will then move to the space I originally purchased it for. My sitting room is the first room you see when you enter the house so I thought I'd put Cha Cha there for a while because it's so cheerful. It's not hung at the correct height for this room but I enjoy seeing it just the same. I'll take some photos of the others for you and Samantha to see as soon as I can. Can't wait to receive Angelic. I like that the background to her is such an interesting departure from your previous Geishas. It's a truly unique piece and I've been showing her off on my Ipad in anticipation of receiving her. Thank you for creating such a beautiful custom piece for my new home. Karen

Mary Pratt 5/6/2017 | 9:17 AM

Hi Karen! Your painting "Angelic" is dry. I am thinking I can ship her on Monday. Let me know if that interferes with your move. Best to you!!! Mary

Mary Pratt 3/29/2017 | 6:02 PM

Ahhhhh Karen!!! Today I mailed Egret so you should be receiving the box soon! I am so excited and grateful for your support. We have the geisha obsession in common. I have loved the geisha since I was a little girl. Traveled with the girlscouts on a train to NYC and bought a geisha doll at The United Nations Building. I guess I was six. Thank you from my heart!!!!!Your new geisha is on the easel!

Mary, I recently received Flamingo Cha Cha and Water Baby 2. Absolutely love them both as I had no doubt I would. When I first started purchasing your work, it was very reassuring to find that your art looks exactly the same in person as it does on U Gallery's website. The colors are very true. Of course, now that I own so many of your pieces, I don't need that reassurance. As you know I just purchased Egret and can't wait for it to arrive. And thank you for the "tease" of the Geisha piece I've commissioned you to do. As we've discussed, I'm somewhat obsessed with Geishas and I know I will be thrilled with the end result. Mary Pratt 1/22/2017 | 3:52 AM

Hi Karen, So sorry I missed placing the certificate of authenticity in the box, however I am very happy you love the work. On Monday I will mail the certificate of authenticity and my recommendations regarding oil paintings hanging in a bathroom. I've had an oil painting in my bathroom for years and see no ill effects. I will send whatever information I can find with the certificate . I am truly honored my work pleases you! With Best Regards, Mary

K Julian style="color: #000000;"1/21/2017 | 5:09 PM

Mary, I wanted to let you know that Purple Vase and Geisha Light arrived safely today. The shipping packaging is top notch and necessary. After staring at small "on-line" versions of these paintings, it's thrilling to see them full size, in person in all their glory. After endlessly searching for pieces of art that speak to me, I'm a little embarrassed by how besotted I have become with your work. A friend was present when I unpacked Geisha Light. She said the smile that appeared on my face when I saw it touched her. I can't wait for my new home to be completed. I know exactly where each of your pieces will be hung. I did not find a certificate of authenticity with Geisha Light. Would you mind mailing one to me? I have a niche wall directly behind my soaker tub in my very large bathroom. I need to place a 30 x 60 or slightly smaller piece of art there with colors that will transition well with Geisha in White along with a hint of the beige/camel/greige colors from purple vase. Once I realized it would be awkward/unattractive to leave this large niche blank, I soon became aware that not all subject matter belongs in a bathroom setting. It also caused me to read a great deal about putting oil paintings in bathrooms even if you are religious about running vents. Some comments I read said it would be almost sacrilege to put an artists work in a bathroom. Others swear they have had oils in their bathroom for years with no apparent ill effects. I'm not looking for nor worried about guarantees, but I wondered if you have any advice/thoughts about oil paintings in large bathrooms you would include in the envelope you mail the certificate of authenticity in. I will certainly understand if you choose not to. Thank you for my beautiful paintings. Karen

Mary Pratt 1/13/2017 | 5:54 PM

Hi Karen, I am without words which for me is unusual. Your appreciation for my work is so appreciated. For an artist, three paintings sent to the same patron is akin to being on "cloud nine". Best of luck in your new home. It is my honor to have my work grace your walls!!! Kindly, Mary

K Julian style="color: #000000;"1/13/2017 | 5:16 PM

Hello Mary. I recently received Geisha in White and am thrilled that in person it is exactly what I expected. I'm building a new house and this will be beautiful in my master bedroom. I love the serenity the piece exudes. Now that I have my first piece of yours in my hands, I just this minute completed another transaction with U Gallery purchasing your "Purple Vase" and "Geisha Light". Your beautiful pieces will be showcased in my new home and I know I and others will enjoy them for years to come. I have a fabulous designer who was not aware of your work. I ran the pieces I picked of yours by her (not that it would have mattered what she said... because I was smitten by them) and she fell in love with your work as well. I'm sure she will be showing your work to clients in the future. I feel I have a good eye but since my ability to draw/paint is at the stick figure level, I am in awe of your talent. Thank you and I will continue to watch your work with great interest. Karen

A friend and I were discussing the woods-like background and he commented it could also be a city background. I can now see both. Love the cardinal, thank you so much!

Frank style="color: #000000;"2/17/2015 | 12:29 PM

Hi Mary- Your artwork, "Nude" just arrived and I am delighted with it. You have captured the essence of Kate, the model, and I am proud to have it in my art room. Please continue with your extraordinary work and I will certainly add you to my list of favorites. Cheers, Frank

Mary Pratt 2/10/2015 | 1:24 PM

Thank you Frank. The model is real; her name is Kate. Kate is also the subject for "Lithe." She's a wonderful model and I appreciate your patronage!

Frank style="color: #000000;"2/10/2015 | 11:04 AM

Hi Mary- I was doing my weekly search of the Ugallery artworks and discovered your latest addition "Nude". I dont know if the model was a real person but there was something very captivating about her. I look forward to receiving the artwork and including it in my artroom. Thanks so much, Frank

I can tell much about an artist by the work they create. Mary, based on your work, you must be a beautiful person! It is a pleasure and a privilege to see what you have done

A Smith style="color: #000000;"7/16/2014 | 12:39 AM

Oh, also meant to add that instead of having it as a wrapped canvas I think I do want to frame in a driftwood type frame with a nice matt, what are your thoughts on this?????

A Smith style="color: #000000;"7/16/2014 | 12:38 AM

I think I would like the 12 x 24 for the postcard pic, what do u think?????

Matisse's exhibit here in Atlanta a few years back included his "Fauve" period. I am humbled by your comparison. Thank you and I will continue to paint! There is nothing I love more!!!

Mary: Your "Two Geisha" is a remarkable painting. It's the only pictorial equivalent to the color harmonies of Matisse, especially during his "Fauve" period - your color instinct is truly very rare and to be celebrated . . . keep painting . . . . more and more!!

Mary Pratt 10/7/2013 | 3:57 PM

Thanks so much! I think Marsh Path looks great without a frame. I have painted the sides by carrying the painting colors around. I appreciate your interest!!!

One of my prized possession. To remain in the family from one generation to next.

Mary Pratt 5/17/2013 | 12:39 PM

Hi P Neerdaels, Thanks so much! The painting of the bird and nest sold. It was a 5' x 6'. I think it is possible to work through Ugallery to set up a commissioned piece. Perhaps even see the colors of the room to insure that the painting will fit. I could also paint another bird and nest and upload it in the new art and you could decide that way. Again, thanks for contacting me.

Mary, Love your work! I briefly saw a large picture of a bird in a nest done by you (sorry didnt pick up on the name of the piece). After just a short period of time it was gone from this site. I live in a cottage designed home with blue/green as the primary color on the walls and was unsure of the color within the picture whether it would get lost on the wall. Difficult to get a true read online. Would love to see similar work by you. There are many many fabulous artists but I have found I enjoy your work the very most.

C Hubbard style="color: #000000;"9/13/2012 | 6:18 PM

Mary Pratt- I received your beautiful "Red" on Monday and when I walk into my living room, where she hangs, it literally takes my breath away. You have such a lightness to your painting. While it is a rather large painting, it is delicate and airy and she is beautiful, in another world-ly way, walking among the lanterns. I very much appreciate, no love, owning "Red" and having a piece of your wonderful work.

Mary Pratt 7/5/2012 | 8:57 PM

  • We love this new art in our dining room. We've probably bought 40-50 original art works from UGallery and have been very, very happy being a customer here.

Your painting, "Magic," arrived today and it is even lovelier than it appeared to be on the website. I find your style extremely appealing and am thrilled to have chosen it. It will definitely take the place on my wall where the "former favorite" now hangs.
