This painting was of a stream within Estes Park, Colorado.  The mountain, tree and stream struck me as an ideal subject that  I had to paint.  After an initial toning of the canvas with raw sienna I layered oil colors while keeping in mind that the background needed to be played down so that the tree and stream remained as the main subject.

Getting to Know Robert

After painting for years out of the family room of his home, Robert took the plunge and built an addition to his home for proper studio space. He works in two very different styles, producing both color-blocked abstracts and realist landscapes. Robert begins each painting by creating a thumbnail value sketch to establish a composition. Each piece reflects his mood, but whether energetic or placid, the colors must always be harmonious. Robert’s technique uses mostly brushes with the occasional addition of palette knives to create subtle surface texture.
