I've been doing little studies of close-ups of cat faces and have had great fun with them. I then discovered that one of my favorites, Dutch artist Braldt Bralds, did close-up cat faces many years before I did! (Of course he did them fabulously.)

Getting to Know J.

Growing up in Southern California, J. Dunster got her start in the art world by selling celebrity portraits to fans - and sometimes even the celebs themselves. She moved on to study drawing, anatomy, and painting at Otis College of Art & Design, and now specializes in oil paintings of portraits, figures and animals. She paints to find the beauty and nobility in things, capturing emotion, drama and silliness. She says quite a few of her models act surprised by what they see in her portraits, “as if I discovered something more noble or beautiful in them. But it's not a put-on, that *is* what I see in them.”
