I was attracted to the late summer evening light sweeping through the woods. I have painted this spot often since it is just behind my home, but it changes all the time. A large tree uprooted, and it created new foreground interest. I used scraping and a palette knife, so there is contrast between the thick and thinly applied paint.

Mickey Cunningham is an impressionist painter from Minnesota who uses loose brushwork and vibrant colors to create landscapes and figurative artwork. Her work is inspired by the Pennsylvania Impressionists Fern Coppedge and Edward Redfield. Throughout her portfolio, she explores adding new abstract elements and experimental colors. In her figurative work, Mickey avoids overly specific or narrative details so that each viewer can interpret it in his or her own way.
