This pice was inspired by the Strelitzia plant, commonly known as the Bird of Paradise flower. Wanting to emphasize the bold beauty of this flower, I chose a stark black background to help the colorful petals pop, and I composed it as a portrait, so that the flower takes on an almost megalithic quality.

This piece has black gallery-wrapped edges and comes wired for easy hanging.

Getting to Know Sumner

Sumner Crenshaw infuses her work with movement, lines and varying degrees of color. She currently lives in Maryland and finds inspiration in the work of Salvador Dalí. Her goal is to keep exploring the minimalist, narrative surrealism she’s been moving toward. Fun fact: The Ballet Russes inspired her to start a series that explores dance through painting.
