"I visited Belgium this spring and stumbled across a few of these beguinages," says Rachel Dowd. "A beguinage is a protected housing area for the city's widows. The medieval cities in Belgium started building these and using them during the time of the Crusades. They are almost completely out of use now, but they are well taken care of and so beautiful."

Getting to Know Rachel

Rachel is a self-taught artist who began developing her skills at a young age. She attributes her thirst for creative pursuits to her childhood travels and early exposure to different cultures. Rachel’s impressionistic style and bright color palette illuminate each subject she paints, particularly her florals. Balancing life as a painter and mom of three young girls has been tricky, but Rachel has figured it out! She homeschools her daughters, and they make time to create art as a family.
