The pristine beach of Bird Island, in Nancy Hughes Miller's native southeastern North Carolina, beckons many walkers and was inspiration for this painting. From memory and imagination, she explored teal and peach colors to express the beauty of one of her favorite places. "I was involved in the efforts to preserve this stretch of shoreline," she says. "Home to migratory birds and nesting turtles, this coastal habitat offers visitors ocean views that are rare and precious."
Cary, North Carolina
Reflected in Nancy Hughes Miller’s paintings are the coastal and rural environments of southeastern North Carolina, her birthplace, where she still spends much of her time. As a child, Nancy’s primary education did not include art classes, so she was delighted when one day her oldest brother returned home from college with newsprint and charcoal. She went on to pursue a career path in graphic design and fine arts. Now a full-time artist, Nancy experiments with vibrant colors and fluid forms to create her non-traditional, painterly landscapes. She enjoys working with oils, a medium that dries slowly and lends itself nicely to blending. Nancy strives to produce artwork that is, according to her, “quiet, yet bold.”
