David Carter explains that 'adagio' is the musical direction for players to perform slowly, gracefully, with ease. He says it is the sprit in which this painting was created, and might also suggest an approach to experiencing it as well. After attaching folds of fabric to the canvas, the painting was meticulously layered with up to fifty glazes of oil paint, often hand-rubbed in, to create a deep luminous finish. "My intent is to create subtle, resonate, atmospheric moods in this work," says David.
Comes framed in a 1.5" deep matte black metal frame.
David Carter
New Salem, Massachusetts
David Carter’s atmospheric abstract paintings are a reflection of the natural world. He strives to create art that is at once sensitive and meditative, yet resonate and contemporary. David describes his creative practice as “finding” paintings, rather than “making” them. "My process is completely intuitive based," he says. "I start by laying in line or layers of color and find my way forward." Spontaneous expression and exploration are key to his inspiration. David is a self-taught artist who has spent many years of experimentation developing the visual grammar that he uses today. Prior to 1990, he was a landscape painter, the influence of which is visible in his current work. Through his abstract paintings, David strives to produce an intimate, visceral, and contemplative experience for the viewer.
My large painting, Pavan (60" x 60" mixed media on canvas), was selected by museum visitors for the Popular Award at the recent 82d Annual Exhibition at the Fitchburg Art Museum here in Massachusetts. Happy to have been included in the show, and that people liked the painting so much!

Happy to announce that my large painting Motet, 60" x 60", has been selected into the annual juried show at Galatea Fine Art in Boston, curated by Julie Burros, Chief of Arts and Culture for Boston. Show will be up August 3 - 28, with an opening reception on August 5th from 6-8pm.
Pleased to have one of my larger paintings, (Memory I, 60" x 60"), included in the national juried show "Patterns", at the Attleboro Arts Museum for the month of July. Also very pleased that they placed the painting very prominently on it's own wall, facing the Museum's main window to the outside.... in a way having my work represent the show to the outside world. Very nice and much appreciated. Some pictures on my web site, www.davidskillicorn.com
