Dimitris Pavlopoulos
Thessaloniki, Greece

Dimitris Pavlopoulos sees his abstract paintings and portraits as vessels to communicate aesthetic beauty and emotion. Stylistically, the work mirrors the great Abstract Expressionists of the 20th century, and Dimitris admires the art of Cy Twombly, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. His abstract works are assembled with a range of media, creating texture on the surface with acrylic, paper, and crayon. You may notice a piece of graph paper, text from a book, or a girl’s sneakers poking out from under layers of paint. Each piece can feel like a collection or quick snapshots of memory, piled together within one controlled space, as if in an attempt to make sense of it all. The works are composed in bands across the surface, and black lines accentuate the movement of the piece, like film stills spinning through a reel. Other pieces, such as Rabat, resemble a landscape, perhaps influenced by the port city of Thessaloniki, Greece where Dimitris currently resides. Looking at the painting, you can envision the many buildings receding from the Mediterranean seaside.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Unstretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas is labeled unstretched, it means the canvas has NOT been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Unstretched canvases typically require stretching or framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
