Keyvan Shovir
Walnut creek, California

Keyvan Shovir, an Iranian born artist, creates Pop Art that combines visual references from his native culture with classic images of American consumerist culture. Borrowing from Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Keyvan paints cultural icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn masked in a hijab or overlaid with Islamic calligraphy. Under his pseudonym CK1, Keyvan was a pioneer of the graffiti movement in Tehran. Iranian artists have experienced censorship of their work since the revolution over 30 years ago. Street and urban art is on the rise in Iran, as young artists use public spaces to question the country’s social and political status quo. Keyvan’s work challenges the notions of the viewer by presenting the familiar in a new and unexpected way, combining two cultures to confront the stereotypes we have of each other. Keyvan currently lives in San Francisco, pursuing his MFA at California College of the Arts.

Comments About This Piece

This piece is part of a series titled "Covering Up," combining modernism and tradition. It is rooted in middle eastern art and American culture. The painting was made with acrylic and fine art-grade spray paint on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
