Ashley Cecil
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Ashley Cecil paints from life, rendering highly realistic birds, flowers and bugs over decorative patterns in rich gem tones. The patterns are bold, in the style of Victorian wallpaper or art nouveau (think William Morris). Ashley began as a portrait painter, but was seduced by textiles during her time in London, where she earned her masters in art business at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Fun fact: Ashley hails from Kentucky where she developed a specialty painting horses. One of her first jobs was creating images for Derby campaigns and liquor companies.

Comments About This Piece

All of my work focuses on nature, whether I'm depicting blooms at Phipps Botanical Gardens or illustrating themes of conservation as an artist in residence at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. This particular piece is a compilation of motifs pulled from other recent works (because I enjoy taking my favorite elements from past paintings and reintroducing them in new arrangements). A few such elements here include blooms on the verge of wilting and a pattern in the upper left corner created from a stencil cut by hand.   This piece is painted with watercolor, pen and ink, liquid ink, and colored pencils on heavyweight paper and will need a frame for display.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Paper is a very common surface for all types of artwork, including photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art paper varies in thickness and color. Read the notes section to learn more about the paper used to create this artwork. If not noted as framed, most paper artwork will require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
