Artist Johnson Folahanmi creates striking mixed media portraits using newspaper, pencil drawings, and oil colors. “There are many challenges to being an artist living in Lagos,” says Johnson. “But these challenges have made us artists become very creative. I am always motivated to produce art based on events and circumstances from my home, and it is my privilege to tell these stories to the world.” Johnson starts by drawing realistic faces using different types of graphite and charcoal. He then cuts up pieces of newspaper into the shapes that fit his narrative, before finally applying oil paint to add color and dimension. Johnson listens to soul and pop music while working from a room in his home with walls painted white, where he says he can easily access his materials and hang his finished work. “I use newspapers in my work because the news is full of untold stories, and I cut them to interpret my stories which also need to be heard.”
