I attempt to capture how rock and gravity work together to form the generative tissue of mountain peaks. Working from treks above timberline, I quickly apply paint, brush and knives to 'sculpt' the unrelenting collision between cosmos and the earth's highest ground.  Later in the studio I refine organic details.

Getting to Know David

David D’Agostino does not paint your quintessential landscape. His work is inspired by treks through New Mexico’s wilderness. He is fascinated by the desolate mountain peaks and desert lowlands, which are in a state of constant environmental flux, like a living, breathing beast. These extreme environments both enthrall and terrorize the artist. He captures the otherworldliness of the barren landscape with cool colors, expressionist brushstrokes, and lots of texture. Although the work is abstracted, the viewer is always looking up to the mountains, which dominate his canvases. The flattened style is reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints, and the reverence for nature’s splendor and power is an inherent quality of traditional Asian art. The achievement of texture through varying brushwork is often used in abstract painting to create a surface that feels aged and eroded. In David’s work this technique captures the depth and roughness of the mountains in a contemporary way. The pronounced brushwork reminds you that you are looking at a painting, just as the majesty of nature reminds you that you are human.
