The Too Long Nap
About this artwork
Artist Johansen Newman shows a sleeping woman lying on a stage, surrounded by cascading curtains. An emerging hand reaches out to her, waking her from her deep slumber. Johansen salvages barn wood, an old clock face, and assorted wood fragments to create the charismatic surface. Rich patterns and details play off the dimensions, making the viewer feel like they are seeing a story unfold to see what happens when she wakes up. The piece comes framed with assembled antique objects with multiple levels and surfaces.
