This is a piece from my "Portals of Interest" series addressing an old idiom of the Seven Seas which depending on history and where you were in the world could be very different bodies of water.  It is now just considered a figure of speech.  But I found researching it pretty interesting and it all goes back to how we are interconnected via water!

Getting to Know Leslie

Leslie grew up in the desert and all the while lusted after the ocean. Her work is strongly influenced by her obsession with water and love of swimming. Nautical and aquatic motifs dominate her various series. To create her compositions, Leslie sources vintage photographs from libraries and museum stock collections to collage into her art. Her combination of photography and painting is intended to represent memories and emotions, respectively. Leslie brings together a wry humor, childlike joy, and an undertone of feminism to remind of us times past and offer us a roadmap for the future. Now a resident of San Francisco, Leslie is surrounded by water in her life and work.
