Artwork

Artist Tomo Mori calls this technique "canvas mosaic," a technique she developed over the last nine years. "The geometric shapes are cut and painted pieces of canvas fabric that I adhered to the stretched canvas. Initially inspired by digital pixels, but harkens back to traditional mosaic making," shares Tomo. "I composed the map-like image with sharp broken shapes painted in subtle grey and pastel colors. They fade softly into the background to create a gentle feel. The background of this piece is painted with very sophisticated champagne gold. It is fun to see the change it produces from day to night or from different angles."

Tomo Mori

New York, New York

Tomo Mori finds herself drawn to images that are melting, dripping, streaming and flowing. Her process is extremely meticulous yet spontaneous in its execution, allowing natural instinct to guide the creativity and fluidity of the work. Tomo's signature technique is collage made of canvas on canvas, a style that adds depth and dimension to her work. Born in Osaka, Japan, her family moved to Tokyo when she was four, where she recalls happy family memories under the cherry blossoms. She is now based in New York, and when she's not making art, Tomo likes spending time with her family and dancing.

My wife and I truly love our new piece from Tomo Mori, “Songs of the Ancestors”! As with most artwork, pictures do not do the piece justice; seeing it in person is astounding. We reached out to the artist with some questions, and she responded quickly and helpfully. We have found Tomo Mori’s work to be wonderfully detailed, tactile and contemplative. This one is a lifetime keeper for us, and we highly recommend Tomo Mori’s work.
