I usually don't have such a backstory as I do with this painting. It must be an accumulative effect but while being aware of our current state I was reminded of a podcast I heard of Irvin Laslow talking about how it's in chaos that we have the greatest opportunity for change. The palm in the painting is symbolic of how we have now achieved a state of great opportunity through our chaos. I glued pieces of canvas onto a cradled wooden panel to get this particular surface.

Getting to Know Stephen

Stephen explores the potential of paint and its physical qualities in his body of work. He sees painting as a way to express the power, beauty and mystery of life. Movements such as Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism continue to influence his abstracted figures. “Working with the figure is my best loved subject,” says Stephen. He begins each painting by returning to his sketchbook, which contains a collection of drawings from life, his imagination, and photographs.
