Artist

Shannon Amidon
San Jose, California

Shannon’s artwork is made with encaustic (molten beeswax) and collaged vintage paper–old letters, maps, book pages, report cards, and other paper bits she finds in antique stores or at estate sales. The repurposing of these often ephemeral materials gives each piece a history beyond itself, and adds to the personal nature of the art. Shannon works in a studio behind her home, in a garage which she converted herself. She also makes her own eco-friendly encaustic and oils. “The environment is very important to me, so I use natural earth pigments,” says Shannon. Her love of nature comes across in the motifs she selects, hinting at both the wonder and delicacy of the cycle of life.

Artist and Customer Comments

I am thrilled to be a new UGALLERY artist. I look forward to adding new artwork and interacting with visitors to my UGALLERY page. I work in the ancient medium of encaustic. It is a wonderful and versatile medium that has a beautiful luminous quality. If anyone has questions about my art, medium or technique I am more than happy to answer them.

Comments About This Piece

The background of this mixed media encaustic painting is made up of a variety of vintage ephemeral materials including old book pages, maps, letters and more. They quietly peek out in sections of the painting and are completely obscured in other areas. This is a mixed media encaustic painting with an image transfer.

The ground in this piece is created through a process called shellac burn, where a section of the painting is painted with shellac and pigment and then set on fire. This creates a beautiful crackle and filigree look.

This painting is on a cradled birch wood panel with black sides and is ready to hang.

Encaustic artwork

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The hot liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials can be used. Metal tools and special brushes can be used to shape the wax before it cools, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate it once it has cooled on the surface. Other materials can be encased, layered or collaged into the surface, using the encaustic medium to adhere them to the surface.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
