Jim Black
Midlothian , Virginia

Jim Black encourages viewers to think of his work as a poem. “The essence of my paintings is found in the structure and the surface, and how the paint is applied,” he explains. Jim finds inspiration in other artists but also writers, musicians and dancers committed to their work. When he’s not making art, he enjoys exercising, listening to music and spending time with the people he loves. He currently lives in Virginia. Fun fact: he has a growing collection of vinyl records that started years ago.

Comments About This Piece

This encaustic artwork was made with oil paint and cold wax. The piece is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Encaustic artwork

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The hot liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials can be used. Metal tools and special brushes can be used to shape the wax before it cools, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate it once it has cooled on the surface. Other materials can be encased, layered or collaged into the surface, using the encaustic medium to adhere them to the surface.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
