Whimsical, colorful painting in bands of greens and orange. "The Love Knot is made using a technique called intarsia, similar to inlaid wood," explains artist Karen Meadows. "It is white and seems to dance above a feeling of sunset colors over dark green watery wax with another stripe of cobalt blue as if reflecting the peeks of blue. I painted the work with encaustic medium, an ancient technique used by the Egyptians. It is a mixture of beeswax and damar resin. I heated it on a hot plate, added pigment and painted while molten. It will last for many years, as is noted by the pieces in the Louvre Museum."

Karen Meadows

San Anselmo, California

Bay Area artist Karen Meadows was encouraged by her parents, an artist and a professor, to pursue the creativing process of making art. After receiving her MFA at California College of the Arts, Karen worked to develop her personal practice while also teaching art at a high school level. In fact, it is a delightful coincidence that UGallery staffer Madeline was a pupil of hers. Now Karen’s time is focused solely on her studio career. Her abstract, mixed-media and encaustic work relies on thoughtful color theory and use of pattern. Karen’s work has been shown at the Lausanne Biennale in Switzerland, at museums in Europe, and across the San Francisco Bay Area.
