Comments About This Piece
I started painting on the subject of “Hope” after the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. In this digital painting I have combined Alice with Marianne, the national symbol of the French Republic. Marianne is an allegory of liberty and reason, and a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty. She symbolizes the "Triumph of the Republic”. In this piece she is riding The Gallic rooster (French: le coq gaulois) an unofficial but historical national symbol of France as a nation. Additionally, she holds another national symbol of France, the tricolor flag. Marianne wears the Phrygian cap, also sometimes called a liberty cap. In artistic representations it signifies freedom and the pursuit of liberty.
My digital work follows the same process of layering as my work on canvas. I research and download different types of papers, printed paper from newspapers, magazines or books, but I also take photographs of crumpled papers or colored papers with interesting lines or shapes. To work on my iPad, using Procreate, a very advanced painting app designed for mobile devices and intended for professional artists. It offers a large range of effects and brush qualities that I really enjoy. I also like this technique because it is a zero waste technique, everything is virtual, no paper, no paint, no mess.
Certain pieces of artwork on UGallery, mostly photography and printmaking, are labeled as either limited edition or open edition. Pieces that are in a limited edition are produced in a set limited quantity. Open edition artworks are not limited in quantity and can be reproduced indefinitely. In both cases, each piece in the edition is identical and is considered an original. Limited edition works are generally more valuable because of the limited number available. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
