Shawna Gilmore
Duluth, Minnesota

Shawna Gilmore calls herself a professional daydreamer. When her children aren’t waking her from her wanderings, she paints to explore the edges of wonder and reality. Her paintings weave back and forth between naturalistic investigations and surreal dreamlike scenarios. She loves to combine these two seemingly separate images to create a body of work that is “like a curio cabinet of experiences.” One prominent theme in her work is the female face or form, often representing a surrogate for herself. You can find Shawna caring for her twin children, discussing the finer aspects of life with her verbally talented husband, going for a walk or reading a good book.

Patricia, I couldn't ask for a more moving reason for purchasing this work! It holds a special place in my heart, marking a moment when I felt anything was possible. . . how appropriate for such a hard-working creative! To speak this belief into your daughter is a mighty thing indeed :) I hope it blesses her.

I'm excited to have this lovely painting to give to my extraordinary daughter. It will be for her 38th birthday. She has two children under four, is a single and mom and works 12-16 hours a day. She is building a business portal to something visionary. A new business paradigm that truly gives back. Her business won't wait. She is a victim of her own sucess . She works all day and the kids keep her up most of the night. If she is this creative and productive NOW I can only imagine if she had "some sleep!" Recently, a whale was incorporated into one project. She spent hours and days as a child traveling and sleeping in a boat. We saw many whales. Up close and personal. If I could give her ANYTHING? Today, it would be sleep! Your painting is as close as I can imagine a restorative, wonderful, spiritual sleep for my girl.

Comments About This Piece

This painting is part of a series of vintage female portraits which explore patterns and design. Vintage portraiture is a common inspiration in my work. This piece is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
