This piece is one of my "Construction" series of paintings. By building up the surface with individual painted pieces of wood, I compose a narrative. The story, in this case, confronts building passion in the face of everyday events. "How to Light A Fire" is composed of painted wood pieces layered and floating in a painted wooden shadow box. It is wired and ready for hanging.

Getting to Know Gwen

A fascination with the division of space drives the work of Gwen Gunter. When approaching a new work, she uses both her intuition and a specific spatial vision. After creating a compositional sketch, she adds color and texture. Then she simply lets the painting guide her. Though she doesn't consider herself a huge science buff, she enjoys listening to physicists talk about quantum mechanics and string theory while she works.
