Alicia Dunn
Encinitas, California

All the elements that could affect a painting - the weather, her mood, or reactions of materials - intrigue Alicia Dunn. “Ceding control to these things allows the magic to happen,” she explains. Her paintings strive to capture the unique energy of nature, particularly derived from the beach. Staring into the mesmerizing colors of her work, the glacial turquoise and luminous orange, the viewer can see the shape of the waves, the swiftness of the wind, and the beginning of a day. Living in San Diego, CA, Alicia enjoys expansive views from her second story studio, with the mountains to the east and the ocean to the west. She calls her studio her “treehouse.” Alicia’s love for the simple things in life, her awe of nature’s perfection, and her sense of discovery, come across in her work. Every piece is rich in color and texture, making it appear fresh and alive, but also weathered and eroded through the process of its creation. Like nature itself, each painting shifts with the viewer, chronicling time through movement and beauty.

Love the art. It goes well when I have it hanging and it ties in with a book that I am writing. Can you contact me regarding permission to use the work in my book? Thanks so much. Allan

I just received your painting Vintage / Modern and absolutely love it! The color, texture and finish are all beautiful and I especially like the wooden box it's painted on...the wood and its dimensional feel led me to purchase your work. Thank you so much!

Comments About This Piece

An abstract landscape created with a tight palette and a minimalistic approach. Simple but complex with a luminous sky and dazzling sunset. Gorgeous shades of blues and sunset orange. This painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished blue edges. It works well vertically although I used a horizontal orientation when I created it. The work comes ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
