"Cascadia 5" explores the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography and sanding techniques on wood. The artist engages her work with notions of repetition, mark-making and blur derived from the pictorial works of artists Jack Whitten, Sterling Ruby and Gerhard Richter. This vividly-colored painting solicits our visual perception by suggesting a discoverable lattice; vibrant motifs seem to emerge out of an optically intricate all-over grid.

The natural world is the blueprint for Melisa’s work, while allusions to past and contemporary culture inform its development. She approaches her artwork by developing her own hybridization of artistic practices. Melisa relies on commercial tools such as blow torches and electrical sanders to create her work, in addition to other labor-intensive methods. By exploring the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography, and sanding on wood, Melisa produces unique abstract art that is simultaneously geometric and organic.
