My two yellow labs have slept this way since they were both puppies, and it has always made me smile because they fit together like puzzle pieces, or yin and yang. I was inspired by the work of John Nieto, and wanted to use bold colors and line to highlight the negative spaces created by the dogs and their bed.
Amy Rattner is a Bay Area artist who paints vibrant animal portraits inspired by the American southwest. Her acrylic and watercolor paintings use strong lines, vivid colors, and symbolic patterns to convey the spiritual, mythological, and cultural significance of various animals. After receiving her BA and MA from Stanford University, she began her artistic career as a graphic designer. The vivid, stylized quality of her work today reflects her background. Amy is interested in examining the influential role that animals have played through different cultures and societies.
