In this painting, my aim was to use minimal marks to capture a maximum of information about the model’s changing moods. I began with a stick and crimson acrylic paint in order to record each gesture, and then one by one I added layers of color - first, golden yellow, and then other brilliant fluid acrylics. Painted on archival paper, this piece needs to be framed for display.

Getting to Know Susan K

Susan K Boyle’s paintings always begin with a real person, a model in the studio. She employs a variety of tools to capture the gesture and spirit of the model, including brushes, pens, crayons, and even ordinary sticks. Susan aims to convey the contour and attitude of each individual. Finishing her artworks with fluid acrylics in vibrant colors, Susan evokes playful energy, movement, and vivacity in her compositions.
