The human figure is an endlessly engaging subject. Not only am I psychologically and emotionally engaged with it but it gives me a "structure" on which to paint an abstract painting.

Getting to Know Stephen

Stephen explores the potential of paint and its physical qualities in his body of work. He sees painting as a way to express the power, beauty and mystery of life. Movements such as Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism continue to influence his abstracted figures. “Working with the figure is my best loved subject,” says Stephen. He begins each painting by returning to his sketchbook, which contains a collection of drawings from life, his imagination, and photographs.
