This painting was inspired by Montana! I took a road trip to Bison National Monument and took in that magnificent country. The mountains towering in the area are of course magnificent as is Flathead lake. For this painting I was inspired by the more gentle beauty of the ponds that made up some protected wetlands.  This piece is painted on plexiglass mounted on a cradled wood panel with natural edges. It comes ready to hang.

Getting to Know Brian

Brian Sostrom’s paintings of water and sky are not your typical picturesque seascapes. They use moody dark blue hues combined with a soft atmospheric sense of light to create something mysterious and mesmerizing. Painting with acrylic on both sides of a Plexiglas panel, Brian uses this clear surface to achieve a pronounced sense of depth and a translucent quality in the scenes. The cropped, square-format compositions do not depict distinct places, but rather seek to elicit a personal emotional response. Looking into the ripples of waves disappearing into a soft horizon, or the obscure, agitated clouds, there is an impression of both emptiness and eternity. Brian was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and his paintings are clearly inspired by the natural beauty of the region.
