This piece explores a singular and cohesive orchestration of aerosol painting, pyrography and sanding techniques on wood. Melisa engages her work with notions of repetition, mark-making, and blur. This complex and ethereal painting solicits our visual perception by suggesting a discoverable lattice; gestural motifs seem to emerge out of an optically intricate grid. The color palette is soft, in deep green, pale pink, sienna and yellow. The work is on a round cradled panel.
The natural world is the blueprint for Melisa’s work, while allusions to past and contemporary culture inform its development. She approaches her artwork by developing her own hybridization of artistic practices. Melisa relies on commercial tools such as blow torches and electrical sanders to create her work, in addition to other labor-intensive methods. By exploring the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography, and sanding on wood, Melisa produces unique abstract art that is simultaneously geometric and organic.
