A late afternoon winter scene, with the setting sun casting long shadows through the tall aspens. The snowy hill and sky glow with the last soft light of the day. Robert used a palette knife to create the colorful paintwork in the trees. Part of his ongoing series looking at this stand of aspens throughout the year, carefully observing the continuously changing foliage, light and color.
After painting for years out of the family room of his home, Robert took the plunge and built an addition to his home for proper studio space. He works in two very different styles, producing both color-blocked abstracts and realist landscapes. Robert begins each painting by creating a thumbnail value sketch to establish a composition. Each piece reflects his mood, but whether energetic or placid, the colors must always be harmonious. Robert’s technique uses mostly brushes with the occasional addition of palette knives to create subtle surface texture.
