About

Artwork

For this compelling portrait, artist Mark Cudd referenced a vintage photograph from the mid-1930s of a girl on a beach. Mark rendered the black and white portrait in his signature style, layering quick brushwork over the more detailed features of the subject. The woman looks down with an intense expression and the hint of small, clad in an iconic bathing suit of the era.

Mark sources his inspiration from old family photographs, found images, or pictures he shoots himself. He arranges the selected elements, sometimes with a bit of embellishment, in an attempt to create a narrative that is relatable to the viewer. Mark aims to establish a dialogue based on common experiences, fears, ideas, and memories. “It should remind you of something,” the artist says of his paintings. Viewers of different ages and demographics can all identify with the feelings of nostalgia evoked by Mark’s work.
