Getting to Know Maria

Pennsylvania-based artist Maria Stabio paints brightly-colored, multi-layered compositions that depict objects from everyday life. Beginning with color-block planes as a background, she overlaps recognizable shapes to create the layers in her paintings. The effect of her unique process resembles light passing through a stained-glass window. The objects she chooses to portray, which include light bulbs, leaves, sandals, and showerheads, are inspired by her trips to visit her family in the Philippines. For Maria, these objects symbolize the subtle differences in the daily life in America and the Philippines. While the subjects Maria depicts are originally based on her own personal experience, each object is highly stylized and reduced to its simplest form. This process resembles the transformation of experience into memory.
