Artist Samuel Pretorius depicts a leisurely walk in Mariatorget Park, Stockholm, on a slow Tuesday noon. Heavy branches droop down as if greeting the few people strolling. The rich foliage creates a refreshing balance together with the buildings and cars along the park. A bicycle leans against a fence, while yellow leaves delicately scatter along the shadowed path.

Artist Samuel Pretorius paints impressionist landscapes that evoke quiet nostalgia. He invariably works with direct source material in representing actual locations he documents through his photographs. "I aim to create fleeting images that you long to see again, a landscape that you will never forget, or a place you yearn to visit, captured in a few brush strokes to hold on to that memory forever," says Samuel. Originally from South Africa, he comes from a family of artists who encouraged him early to paint and draw. In primary school, his work was included in a national exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. While growing up, his art education came from exhibiting at local art galleries, participating in open markets and plein air painting events, and joining monthly exhibitions. Recently becoming a US citizen, Samuel decided to dedicate a home studio space to fulfill his passion for painting. His well-lit area, often supervised by his Siamese cat, allows him to paint any time of the day. Outside the creative industry, Samuel enjoys exploring the world's beauty and creating code as a software developer.
