A magical evening scene filled with lush vegetation captured by artist Rebecca Klementovich en plein air on Monhegan Island, Maine. "The Cathedral Woods Trail is one of the most beloved trails on the island," explains Rebecca. "It's located about ten miles offshore and over an hour by boat from Port Clyde. The spirit is on the Mohegan's fairy trail, where you can spend some time exploring the island's spruce forest, the aptly named Cathedral Woods. These woods are part of the vast swath of undeveloped conservation land on the island first protected with great foresight back in the mid-1900s by Theodore Edison."

Rebecca Klementovich

Somersworth, New Hampshire

Artist Rebecca Klementovich paints expressionist views of the New England landscape. Merging her lifelong interest in fashion, she co-founded the group Femme Fatales of the North. "We are painting in gowns on the tops of mountains and slapping paint on canvases," says Rebecca. "We are an example of who the northern women are as artists." Her colorful palette and gestural style draw influence from her long career in the fashion world. Rebecca studied fashion illustration at FIT in New York and worked as a textile designer and art director for over twenty years. After leaving New York, she moved to northern New Hampshire near Mount Washington. "The mountains are nostalgic and lyrical, and this greatly affected my landscapes." Today, she spends many hours observing the fields, forest and sky, and the changing seasons.

MEET THE FEMME FATALES The Femme Fatales of the North are abstract painters Rebecca Klementovich and Kristen Pobatschnig, partnering Abstract Art with the the Local New England landscape. The two artists are from northern New Hampshire, and they enjoy showing their work in non-traditional ways. By hosting shows outdoors in unique settings, they bring the viewer outside of traditional gallery space to see the art in their natural habitat, amongst the trees, grass and snow. By pairing contemporary art with the outdoors, they offer an outdoor gallery experience to be enjoyed by art goers and non-art goers alike. They are known for promoting the presence of women in the Arts with their photographic endeavors. This fun collaboration helped me develop a deeper understanding of uniting women, nature, and art.
