Artwork

Rick Hamilton's inspiration comes together from his imagination and daily interactions with others. Sometimes he hears a sentence or phrase during a conversation and it just sticks in his head. He then often writes that phrase on his studio wall before turning it into a painting. Rick says "I did this as more of a question than a statement. Is love all there is?"

Rick Hamilton

South Portland, Maine

Richard Hamilton began painting 15 years ago when he noticed a young neighbor painting outdoors. It looked like such fun, so he purchased his first materials and has been hooked ever since. Inspiration often strikes during conversation or listening to the radio. "Someone may say a certain phrase or lyric and in my head I will say 'That sounds like a painting!'" Richard paints to make connections with people, and loves to hear how his work makes others feel. He fondly remembers one collector remark that, out of the 400 artworks in his collection, his piece sparked the most conversation.

You may be crazy. I don’t know about that but you are right about the legs! Just 3.

Call me crazy...does the bull have three legs?

Thank you for your comments! I really appreciate it. The reason I paint on wood is because I'm very physical on my paintings. I scrape and sand the surface. Each piece can have up to 10 or more layers of paint on it. It all started a couple of years ago when I had a painting that I didn't like. I asked my kids to take it outside and scrape it on the sidewalk to try to get rid of the image. I really liked the effect. So now I use sanders, scrapers, heat guns, and improvised tools to manipulate the surface. It's a lot of fun and very loud. Thanks.

Hello Rick, The first place I look is at your art work! I'm so drawn to it, love your style & uniqueness!!! I can't get enough. I have a question for you....why have you chosen wood to paint on? I've never tried it and wondered what your reason are. Thanks so much for putting a huge smile on my face every time!

This piece is perfect for our foodie family. It's humorous and a great conversation piece.

At Your Service. I use the crown in many paintings to symbolize a king. Maybe this server used to be a king?Is this a sign of humility for a past king?Or does he just see himself as a king?
