"This piece was inspired by a recent trip behind the scenes with the elephants at the San Diego Wildlife Park," explains Amy Rattner. "One young female "aunt" reached her trunk up in greeting to the two baby elephants in the herd. She did not yet have a calf of her own but the guide told us that she loved babysitting the new babies and was practicing caring for her own baby. I loved the look of joy and excitement when she saw the baby calves. It was clear that she had a deep emotional bond with them."
