A view from the beach at sunset, the tide crashes into the shore in abstract swirls of yellow-green froth. On the horizon, the last light of the day glows in orange and pink. Hilma says she built up the texture and used several polymers and crackle paste to accentuate the movement of the water. The sides of the gallery wrapped canvas are painted light grey.
Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles
Hilma Koelman has traveled the world, but always found herself coming back to the ocean. Living in Curacao, a tropical island in the Caribbean, provides endless inspiration for her art, from the deep turquoise of the water to the colorful buildings of the island. She uses her abstract paintings to express her passion and energy. Hilma may go through states of happiness, struggling, or insecurity when she’s creating a work of art, but she always arrives at a feeling of satisfaction, at which point she knows the painting is finished.
