Artwork

Artist Ruth LaGue paints a pastoral landscape with a white barn partially concealed by trees. Inspired by the shapes and patterns of a field of flowers, Ruth draws the viewer's attention to the piece's contrasting hues. She captures the rhythm of sunlight, forms, and shadows cast by the warm rays of light. Her intuitive usage of solid and vibrant colors captures the warmth and serenity of the countryside.

Ruth LaGue

Florence, Massachusetts

Artist Ruth LaGue paints pastoral landscapes and architecture pared down to their barest forms. By providing the most minimal visual cues, she invokes rather than details—adjusting the placement of the horizon line in her paintings, suggesting a range of natural formations. "I am particularly drawn to the interplay between colors and textures in defining spaces," says Ruth. Growing up in an artistic family in Alaska, she has always been encouraged to be creatively curious. Ruth found an indelible connection between the vast, wild landscape of her childhood and the limitless internal landscape of the soul as she traveled through India. The concepts of her practice as a graphic designer and creative director—with a focus on user-centric design—carry over to build a strong foundation for her current work, stretching form, line, and color to their limits. She works at her home studio in Massachusetts with her two Havanese dogs, Rikki and Owen, keeping her company. When she's not painting, Ruth enjoys working the computer, reading, and watching The Great British Bake Off.
